And I can't imagine working a different way now.

So they aren't a direct match, but close enough! Not cheap mind!Īll in all, I've loved switching to Mac from PC. However, what they don't have is the lower part, under the screen, which is where the gubbins of the computer is housed. The two screens thing - yes Apple do beautiful monitors that *nearly* match their iMac screens. I use Carbon Copy Cloner, which seems really good so far. Synctoy - never used it, but there is a plethora of sync and backup apps to choose from. The only limitations I've found so far have been video apps, specifically ones that deal with AC3 and DTS audio types.

Software wise, pretty much everything you could use on Windows you can get for Mac. I've never used a second screen with my Mac, but I've seen people do it, so I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to. There is also minimise, which is also different from close! In OSX, closing isn't quitting - the app still runs. In windows when you close the app, it quits. But the most used I find are CMD+W and CMD+Q (CMD is the command key) CMD+W is to close the window of an app, and CMD+Q is to quit the app - and there is a difference. They are similar, but different to Windows ones, and some require more than two keys. The other thing worth getting used to is keystroke commands. So the status bar changes from app to app to to provide those controls. In Windows you have all the File, Edit, etc menu's built into the app along the top, whereas most, if not all, Mac apps don't. Also, give the trackpad a try - it's completely changed the way I interface with a computer I absolutely love it! I just can't use regular laptop trackpads now!Īs for the status bar - yes it's a context menu, and basically all the controls for the app you're running.

However, don't write off the Mac keyboard too quickly - I was skeptical of it at first, but now I find it SO much nicer to use then any of the other manufacturer keyboards I've used on windows over the years (like you I've been using Windows for many years I think I remember Win 3.1, I definitely remember Win 95, 98, 2000, XP, and a little bit of use with 7) There is also a longer version with numeric pad on it. Regarding the keyboard, yes you can - USB, wifi, blurtooth, it should work fine. Fortunately, I'd had sporadic experience with Macs before I switched (enough to actually make me realise I wanted to switch), but even so it's a different way or working, so takes a bit of getting used to. It's a bit of a jump when you first move, especially if you've never used one before.

One myth was busted for me straight away though, it needed a software update out of the box, and as it was happening the damn thing crashed, not even an hour on and down it went !! So much for that !! What is annoying the crap out of me at the moment though is that everything is mirror image to a pc, the close button is on the left instead of the right, the top menu bar seems to be context sensitive so if you have multiple apps open its quite confusing, but as I said, early days yet, suppose you just have to get used to it. Regarding the iMac, a second screen is I believe possible, though Im not 100% sure on that. Skype is available as is microsoft office in all its incarnations.

Photoshop is of course available, probably more famous on the mac than it actually is on the PC as the usual IPS panels for macs are much more color accurate than most.Ĭuteftp and dreamweaver are also available. Thunderbird is available, use that myself, so no worries there. Still, only have it since wednesday, so far too early to quit, its a mac mini Im hoping to use as a smaller neater and quieter HTPC. Im typing this on a new mac now, having built countless PC's and worked all my life on PC's from the very early days, I have to say I'm finding it a bit of a struggle.
